Building Your Kit

What is an emergency kit?

After an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days. Being prepared means having your own food, water and other supplies to last for several days. An emergency kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.  Make sure your emergency kit includes the items on the Plan 9 below.

Tip #1

An emergency go bag should be lightweight enough for the adult or child to easily carry it, but large enough to hold essential items needed for up to three days. A backpack is a good choice because it leaves your hands free to hold onto other items, but a small suitcase with wheels or even rolling backpack can also work. Remember, you may be running with your bag.

Tip #2

Experts recommend at least a gallon of water per person per day. You can tote the full supply in pouches or jugs or opt to treat water on the go with lighter options like portable water filters and water purification chemicals.  Plan to have enough for three days.
